Position: Communication Designer, Oculus Developers Conference 6 (OC6)
Session: The More Things Change: How Trends in VR Apply to Oculus Quest
(NOTE: While I designed for several sessions of the conference, this will outline the concept and design of the final portion of this particular session)
Every speaker is different, and it’s important to design with their style in mind so they remain comfortable while presenting. The experts for this session were extremely conversational, passionate about the material and had a great rapport, leading to a need for standalone visualizations to convey a broad set of ideas.
Their outline for the session was minimal at best, and the brief for this final section was to “take the the audience on a journey” by showing them the joy of virtual reality and its ability to make one “feel like you are there.”
The keywords to focus on - visceral, tactile and motion.
These three concepts were key in VR design - where users can stand and look over a ledge, grab a doorknob and turn around to walk into a completely different world.
Inspired by the feeling of putting on the Oculus visor for the first time, the final animation shows the rush you can feel as you switch between worlds at the turn of your head, traveling along pathways and touching objects virtually along the way. It allowed the presenters to speak freely as the visuals looped through the different worlds and gave the audience a true sense of the endless possibilities of the virtual world.
